Archie Query Form

In the early 1990s, the first search engine named Archie was invented by Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan and J. Peter Deutsch, computer science students at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It was a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) system which accesses to online software archives, searched FTP sites to create an index of downloadable files. It was a limited space that’s why only the listed contents were available here.


World Wide Web Virtual Library (VLib)

In 1991, Tim Berners-Lee set up a Virtual Library for World Wide Web (www). In the same time, CERN webserver hosted a list of web servers at the early age of the Internet.

World Wide Web Wanderer

This search engine upgraded rapidly and proved successful that it will become the world’s most favourite Search Engine one day. Finally, Google set at Mountain View in 2003. From that time Google has updated its all algorithm very highly and has become the most used web-based search engine in the world.


Bing

On May 28, 2009, Microsoft created its own operating Web Search Engine named Bing. It was created by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. The service has its origins in Microsoft’s previous search engines. It upgraded as MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing provides a variety of search services, including web, video, image and map search products. It developed using ASP.NET.

Schema.org

In 2011, Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft collaborate to create Schema.org to maintain and prompt schemas for more structural internet data.

Panda

In 2011, Google added “Panda” in its algorithm to rank a website in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page). At that time, content farms and scraper sites, among others, are negatively affected Google search results by which 12% of Google search results in the US are affected.  To overcome this problem, Google updated its algorithm named “Panda”.

Penguin

In 2012, Google again updated its algorithm as “Penguin” to keep SEOs on their toes.

Hummingbird

In 2013, Google added the first search algorithm named as “Hummingbird” with the ability to parse the intent of the human query, rather than just the language itself.

Pigeon

In 2014, Google updated its algorithm as “Pigeon” in order to deliver more useful, relevant, and accurate local search results. In the same year, Google prioritizes website security and calls for “https everywhere”. “https” also a ranking factor for a website.

Mobilegeddon

In 2015, Google releases “Mobilegeddon” as an update designed algorithm to make the site mobile-friendly pages in mobile search results. In the same time, Bing also releases its own mobile-friendly algorithm update.

Featured Snippet Algorithm

On January 23, 2020, Google Featured Snippet Algorithm added to its SEO ranking algorithm. It will restrict URLs that shows in the featured snippet to appear again within the first ten organic search results.
